California State Fair

To celebrate the end of summer we decided to take a little trip to Sacramento to enjoy one of the last days of the California State Fair. We enjoyed the exercise in the hot sun, the cinamon rolls, the chocolate covered strawberries, the grilled corn on the cob and turkey legs, the gyros, and the (few and far between) free samples. We were both surprised that the California State Fair had displays of quilts, tractors, farming techniques, and farm animals, much like you would expect to see at a midwestern state fair. One thing unique to the California state fair was the wine sampling. While we opted not to get into that line, we did try some frozen margarita-like apple white wine slush. It was delicious! We also had the opportunity to see a piece of the twin towers from 9-11 that they had in a memorial display to honor all those who lost their lives that day. Of course we couldn't walk away from the fair without buying anything. We decided to save ourselves money in the long run to purchase a kit that helps you make sushi rolls much easier than the traditional bamboo mat rolling method. (Of course when we got home we had to try it out...and it works! So when we get back to Saint Louis, watch out! We'll be bringing sushi!) At the county diplays we were able to "vacation shop" as all of the counties showed off their best vacation locations. While we were visiting these displays we were able to see the man who playeed the original Chubaca. We thought about getting his autograph for our Star Wars-crazy friend Randy from Bethany, but they wanted $25 just for him to sign anything! Finally, to end our day, Jon and I got to make a guest appearance on the Channel 10 (ABC)'s weather report. It was a brief second of fame, but it was fun! :) After six hours of walking, we were exhausted and glad to be heading home...even if it meant sitting in 45 minutes of a traffic jam. :)
